Chelsea has played at Stamford Bridge for over a century, but the club may need to relocate after failing to increase the stadium’s capacity. It has been reported that Chelsea is in discussions with Transport for London and developers Delancey regarding a potential new stadium site.
With a capacity of just over 40,000, Stamford Bridge is the ninth largest stadium in the Premier League, smaller than those of other top clubs. Under Roman Abramovich’s ownership, Chelsea previously considered moving to Battersea Power Station, but the plans fell through in 2012.
Currently, the club is exploring a site in Earl’s Court, located less than two miles from their current home. According to reports, Chelsea CEO Jason Gannon has held productive talks with both Transport for London and Delancey. The Lillie Bridge depot is believed to be the potential location, although the current development plans for the area do not include a football stadium.
The relocation is estimated to cost around £500 million and would require the approval of Chelsea Pitch Owners, who hold the freehold to Stamford Bridge. Additionally, the club would need to address fan concerns about moving from their historic ground.
Redeveloping Stamford Bridge is still an option, though reports suggest such a project could force Chelsea to play in a temporary venue for up to six years. In October 2023, the club purchased 1.2 acres of nearby land from Stoll, a veterans’ housing charity, for £80 million. Stoll will retain 20 apartments, and residents will not have to relocate immediately. The sale will allow Stoll to fund new housing projects and secure long-term financial stability.
