Henry Cartwright remains optimistic about Leicester City’s Development Squad despite their 3-0 loss to Northampton Town, asserting that the young side held their own against a seasoned Football League team.

Although the Under-21s were defeated at Sixfields Stadium on Tuesday, Cartwright, 19, saw plenty of positives. For much of the game, Leicester’s young squad matched the intensity and skill of their League 1 hosts. Northampton’s two goals in quick succession during the second half shifted the game out of reach, but Cartwright felt that the result didn’t reflect the effort or quality his side showed, acknowledging Northampton’s physicality as a decisive factor.

“The team played excellently from start to finish,” Cartwright commented. “We controlled possession and dominated play across the pitch, apart from in the two penalty areas.”

Reflecting on the first half, Cartwright said Leicester were in command, moving the ball efficiently and creating numerous chances. However, they lacked the final pass or finishing touch to turn that advantage into goals. “If you only see the scoreline, it looks like we were outclassed, but that’s far from true,” he emphasized.

Cartwright sees these matches as valuable learning experiences. He hopes for more opportunities, especially with a fixture against Notts County on the horizon. The midfielder has already contributed three goals and two assists in Premier League 2 this season, demonstrating his growth and impact within the team.

“In the Football League, winning is paramount, while for us, it’s also about developing our performance,” he explained. “Games like these allow us to show that we’re also aiming for victories.”

Cartwright noted that facing League teams shows the key differences between professional and Under-21 football, an essential lesson for any player aiming to reach Leicester’s First Team. “These games are where we want to be,” he added, “and they’re a great stepping stone for us.”

“We’ve had a strong PL2 season with some solid performances. The results haven’t always matched our play, like tonight, but I’m focused on showing my abilities in these matches and proving what I bring to the squad.”
