Arsenal are eyeing a move for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as they look to add more depth to their midfield next season. Following their recent signing of Mikel Merino from the Basque club, Arsenal hopes to make Zubimendi their second successive acquisition from Sociedad, identifying the Spanish international as a strong fit for the qualities Mikel Arteta’s squad still needs.

Zubimendi, a 25-year-old midfielder, had previously been linked with Liverpool over the summer. Although he initially seemed set to join as Arne Slot’s first signing, he ultimately decided to stay with his boyhood club, Real Sociedad, even with a £50 million deal on the table. His choice was partly influenced by the departures of key players like Merino and Robin Le Normand, and a desire not to leave the club in a tough spot.

Reports suggest Arsenal view Zubimendi as an ideal No. 6 and aim to leverage their strong relationship with Real Sociedad to finalize the transfer. With Merino already at Arsenal, the club believes his presence could help Zubimendi settle in smoothly if he makes the move to North London.

When discussing Liverpool’s interest, Zubimendi reflected, “There was a lot of noise and a few uncomfortable moments, but staying here felt right. I made my choice calmly and don’t regret it.”

Meanwhile, Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, has praised Zubimendi, ranking him as the world’s second-best midfielder behind Manchester City’s Rodri, who is currently sidelined. Zubimendi’s performances have also caught the attention of City, who may look to bring him in to boost their title ambitions. De la Fuente commented, “In my view, Martin is the second-best player in his position, following Rodri. We are incredibly fortunate to have both him and several other outstanding players in the squad.”
