Despite the New York Jets’ disappointing season, Aaron Rodgers might stay with the team beyond this year. The 41-year-old quarterback, who had previously indicated interest in playing a few more seasons, confirmed this week that the Jets’ 3-7 record hasn’t changed his outlook on the future. When asked directly if he plans to return next season, Rodgers nodded, responding, “I think so, yeah.”

The speculation around Rodgers’ future has been amplified by his uncharacteristically rough season. He’s faced a series of setbacks after returning from an Achilles injury that kept him sidelined for nearly all of last season. While he managed to lead the Jets to wins over the Patriots and Texans, he struggled significantly in their recent 31-6 loss to Arizona, completing only one deep pass. Lingering issues with his ankle, knee, and hamstring have also limited his mobility, which was a key part of his success earlier in his career. Rodgers himself has acknowledged that he hasn’t met his own standards this season.

When Rodgers was traded to the Jets in April 2023, hopes were high, with the team aiming for a deep playoff run. However, a 2-3 start led team owner Woody Johnson to dismiss head coach Robert Saleh and appoint defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as interim coach. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett—Rodgers’ former colleague in Green Bay—was moved out of his role as primary play-caller in favor of Todd Downing. The Jets also made a move to bring in wide receiver Davante Adams, a former teammate of Rodgers in Green Bay. However, the team has continued to struggle, going 1-4 under Ulbrich.

Despite the challenges, Rodgers has been vocal about his support for Ulbrich, who he believes has brought valuable changes and could one day become an NFL head coach. He praised Ulbrich for keeping the team united through tough times and preventing fractures within the group. Though saddened by Saleh’s departure, Rodgers commended Ulbrich’s approach and urged fans to stay hopeful for the rest of the season.

Reflecting on his time in New York, Rodgers acknowledged the frustrations of an injury-laden season and the adjustments required to build rapport with a new team. Although he’s faced obstacles, Rodgers described his experience with the Jets as a “beautiful” journey, even if the football aspect hasn’t fully met expectations.
