Newcastle United are advancing their efforts to appoint a new chief executive following Darren Eales’ decision to step down from the role. Eales announced in September that he would leave the position after being diagnosed with a chronic form of blood cancer but confirmed he would remain in post until a successor is chosen.

Reflecting on his decision, Eales stated, “Serving as CEO of Newcastle United has been an incredible privilege. I’m immensely proud to have been part of the club’s exciting progress. However, this is the right time to prioritize my health and family.”

Eales assured that operations would continue seamlessly during the transition and expressed his gratitude to the club’s community, adding, “I’m thankful for the support from fans, players, staff, and ownership, and I look forward to seeing the club achieve lasting success.”

Club chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan acknowledged Eales’ contributions, emphasizing the importance of a thorough search process to identify the next CEO.

The recruitment process is now in motion, with former Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham reportedly among the candidates being considered. Venkatesham, who worked closely with Newcastle’s current chief commercial officer Peter Silverstone during his time at Arsenal, is a strong contender.

Venkatesham and Silverstone played key roles in securing Arsenal’s £300 million partnership with Adidas in 2019. Within a year of joining Newcastle, Silverstone successfully brokered Adidas’ return to the club, underscoring their shared commercial acumen.

Silverstone praised Venkatesham upon his Arsenal departure earlier this year, remarking on LinkedIn, “It was a privilege to work with you for seven years. Your leadership and support were invaluable. Wishing you all the best as you reflect on your incredible career – see you soon.”

As Newcastle continues its search for a leader to build on Eales’ legacy, the focus remains on securing a visionary who can guide the club toward its long-term ambitions.
