Newcastle United’s pursuit of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer ultimately ended in disappointment, with Palace co-owner Steve Parish pulling the plug on the deal just as the transfer window was closing. Although Newcastle reportedly considered paying up to £70 million for the England centre-back, manager Eddie Howe has since stated that the actual numbers were far lower. Regardless, Guehi is still at Palace, and Newcastle’s search for a right-sided centre-back continues.

Transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has now suggested that Newcastle will make another attempt to sign Guehi in January, though he emphasized that the club won’t drag out negotiations. “If they had to pick one centre-back, it would be Guehi,” Bailey said. “But they won’t waste time if a deal isn’t possible. Newcastle have done their homework on him and are very keen, with Eddie Howe particularly fond of his character, which aligns with the kind of player Howe values.”

Despite many fans having moved on from the Guehi saga, it makes sense for Newcastle to revisit the deal in January, especially as the defender’s contract with Palace has just 18 months remaining. With Palace struggling this season, Guehi might be more open to a move, though any transfer would need to be financially viable for Newcastle. While the club’s focus will likely be on strengthening their attack in the upcoming transfer windows, Guehi remains a key defensive target.
