Paul Warne, manager of Derby County, has voiced his disbelief over any suggestion that Leeds United boss Daniel Farke is under pressure. As the Rams gear up for a challenging trip to Elland Road this weekend, Warne reflected on Derby’s previous visit in 2019, when Frank Lampard led them to a dramatic play-off semi-final win. The match also recalls the infamous ‘Spygate’ scandal, when Marcelo Bielsa’s staff were caught spying on Derby’s training sessions ahead of a key encounter.
Since that season, both clubs have experienced significant changes. Leeds have continued their rise through the ranks of English football, while Derby have struggled, fighting relegation. Leeds’ disappointing finish to last season, coupled with a recent defeat to Blackburn, has led to some criticism of Farke, especially with the team now sitting outside the promotion spots.
Despite the growing pressure, Warne defended Farke’s position, expressing astonishment at the notion of him being under threat. “I can’t believe he’s being pressured at all,” said Warne. “If they did get rid of him, I don’t know who they’d bring in to do a better job.” He also lauded Leeds as a formidable team, calling Elland Road one of the toughest places to play in the league.
Leeds’ quality has also been acknowledged by other managers this season. Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder and Millwall’s Neil Harris both named Leeds the toughest side they’ve faced in 2024.
However, the pressure on Farke has intensified this year, following Leeds’ failure to earn promotion last season. Key departures, including Archie Gray, Glen Kamara, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville, have dealt a blow to Leeds’ ambitions. With high expectations still in place, the pressure on Farke remains. Should Leeds fall short again this season, the German coach could face uncertainty over his future.
