Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace praised Leeds United as having the “best squad of players” in the Championship after his team secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Elland Road on New Year’s Day. Despite conceding a penalty in the second half, Eustace’s side held firm defensively, frustrating Leeds and limiting their opportunities. Pascal Struijk’s penalty put Leeds in front, but Blackburn responded late with Danny Batth’s equalizer, just minutes after the penalty.
Eustace acknowledged that a penalty in a similar situation might not have been awarded to his side, but he remained focused on the result, expressing satisfaction with halting Leeds’ strong home run. He also took the opportunity to commend the quality of Daniel Farke’s squad, recognizing their strength despite the draw.
“We defended excellently,” Eustace reflected. “We made it difficult for Leeds to break us down, and I think Aynsley Pears only had one save to make in the final moments. Coming to Elland Road, against the best team in the league with the best players, and getting a draw is something we’re really happy with.”
On the penalty decision, he added: “I don’t think we’d have got that if the situation was reversed. It’s a huge club with 36,000 fans, and the referee’s under pressure in those moments. At Elland Road, especially in the last few minutes, you kind of expect those decisions to go their way.”
Looking ahead, Leeds will travel to Hull City for a Saturday lunchtime match, while Blackburn will face a crucial early kick-off against promotion rivals Burnley at Ewood Park.
