After the Miami Dolphins’ tough 30-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, former running back Reggie Bush publicly criticized head coach Mike McDaniel, even calling for his firing. Bush, who played for the Dolphins from 2011-2012, wasn’t under McDaniel’s tenure but was a significant player during his time in Miami, rushing for over 2,000 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns. In a pointed Instagram comment, Bush voiced his frustration, stating McDaniel “should have never had the opportunity” and that the team needed to “fire the coach” after such a disappointing performance.

McDaniel, who has been at the helm since 2022, holds a 25-21 record and has led the team to two playoff appearances. However, the Dolphins’ performance this season has been underwhelming, leaving them with a 5-7 record and struggling with mounting injuries and inconsistency. While Miami’s offense has displayed explosive potential, it has lacked the consistency needed in high-pressure games, as seen in their Thanksgiving loss.

The Dolphins’ running game, which has been a key part of their offensive strategy, has been virtually nonexistent in recent weeks. In the loss to the Packers, the team managed just 14 carries for 39 yards. Since a Week 9 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, Miami has averaged only 63.25 rushing yards per game, a sharp decline from earlier in the season.

Compounding the issue, Miami’s defense also faltered, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has a troubling 0-8 record in cold-weather games, couldn’t find his rhythm. The Dolphins have now dropped 12 straight games in temperatures below 40 degrees, and the lack of overall team performance has left many questioning McDaniel’s leadership. With injuries continuing to pile up and inconsistency plaguing both sides of the ball, some are wondering whether McDaniel is the right coach to guide the team into a successful postseason.

Despite these struggles, McDaniel has managed to keep his job, even as other teams, like the Chicago Bears, have swiftly made coaching changes after disappointing losses. With Miami’s upcoming home game against the struggling New York Jets (3-8), the Dolphins have a chance to right the ship. A win would bring them back to a .500 record, but questions about McDaniel’s ability to lead Miami to sustained success linger as the season progresses.
