Joe Cole has commended Newcastle’s Lewis Hall for a standout defensive performance in their 1-0 win over Arsenal, describing it as a “huge test” that strengthens Hall’s case for an England call-up under new head coach Thomas Tuchel. At 20, Hall managed to limit Bukayo Saka’s effectiveness at St James’ Park, while Newcastle’s early lead, secured by Alexander Isak’s header, held up thanks to strong defensive efforts by Hall and Tino Livramento. Arsenal only managed a single shot on target, struggling to break down Newcastle’s defense.

Speaking with TNT Sports, Cole expressed his belief that Hall has the potential to be England’s future left-back, with Lucy Ward naming Hall the player of the match. Hall, who recently represented England’s Under-21 team, showcased his readiness by containing Saka throughout the game. Cole pointed out that injuries to Luke Shaw and recurring fitness issues for Ben Chilwell open the door for younger talent like Hall. Describing Hall’s maturity and focus, Cole said, “That was a major challenge… Saka is in great form, but Hall handled it with ease.” He credited Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, for placing Hall in an effective defensive setup.

Martin Keown shared similar praise, noting Hall’s “exceptional” game while also recognizing Livramento’s solid effort in controlling Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli on the opposite flank.

The England squad currently lacks a dedicated left-back, with Rico Lewis recently stepping in for the role in Nations League matches. This situation presents an opportunity for Hall to potentially enter future England squads.

Reflecting on the chance to represent England, Hall acknowledged the limited options at left-back but emphasized that his main focus remains on performing for Newcastle. Signed last summer by the Magpies for a reported £28 million plus add-ons, Hall initially saw limited game time but has since established himself as a regular.

Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, praised Hall’s reliability, calling him one of the team’s most consistent players this season. Howe attributed Hall’s progress to his hard work and resilience in adapting to Newcastle’s high standards. Noting Hall’s improvement in both defense and attack, Howe remarked, “He managed to contain a top player today and continues to grow each week.”
