Eddie Howe praised Joelinton following Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park.
After starting in central midfield in their last Premier League game against Chelsea, Joelinton was shifted to the left wing for Wednesday’s match, which saw Howe make five changes to the starting lineup. Joe Willock also returned to the team, playing on the left side of a midfield trio that included Sandro Tonali and Sean Longstaff.
Joelinton and Willock had formed a strong partnership in the 2022/23 season, contributing significantly to Newcastle’s Champions League qualification. Although injuries hindered their ability to build on that success last season, their performance against Chelsea highlighted their effective collaboration. Howe was quick to commend Joelinton for his exceptional performance.
“Joelinton deserves special recognition today,” Howe remarked. “His ability to adapt is invaluable, as he can play on the left, right, or even as a wingback. He was outstanding.”
Joelinton’s strong showing on the wing has introduced a selection dilemma for Howe as Newcastle gears up for upcoming fixtures against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. With options like Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes available for the left flank, Howe noted the challenge of making a decision.
“It’s a difficult choice given the talent we have on that side—Anthony, Harvey, Joe, and Joelinton each bring something special. Joelinton and Willock complement each other very well in that position. I don’t have a definitive answer yet, but we are lucky to have such capable players vying for these positions,” Howe acknowledged.
