A 15-year-old Everton fan from Sydney, Australia, was left heartbroken when the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, which he had saved up for months to attend, was postponed just hours before kick-off. Mackenzie had long dreamed of experiencing an Everton vs. Liverpool match at the iconic stadium, a wish he shared with his mother, Rita, during a visit to England over Easter. At first, Rita was doubtful about the possibility, citing the cost of the trip. However, Mackenzie’s determination led him to save every penny of his own money to make the dream a reality. “He told me two weeks ago, ‘I really want to go, Mum. Can I?’ and I said, ‘Well, if you’ve got the money, I can’t stop you,’” Rita explained. “We’re really proud of him for doing it on his own.”
While staying with his aunt in England, Mackenzie had already seen Everton’s 4-0 victory over Wolves earlier in the week, but the highly anticipated Merseyside derby, the 245th edition, was set to be a historic occasion as it would be the final league match at Goodison Park before the club moves to Bramley-Moore Dock. Sadly, the match was postponed at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning due to Storm Darragh’s impact, leaving Mackenzie’s dream unfulfilled.
