Ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, Mikel Arteta’s praise for Julen Lopetegui’s team may not sit well with some Hammers supporters. Arteta described West Ham as a “really well-coached” side, a label not frequently used in reference to the club during Lopetegui’s tenure.

There has been speculation about Lopetegui’s future, with recent reports revealing that West Ham approached former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, as well as ex-FC Porto boss Sergio Conceicao, about potentially taking over. However, a key 2-0 victory at Newcastle, largely thanks to Jarrod Bowen’s performance, could signal a shift in the Spaniard’s fortunes. Still, the uncertainty surrounding his position remains, and a heavy defeat to another London rival could reignite questions about his long-term future at the club.

Despite the swirling doubts around Lopetegui’s position, Arteta is steadfast in his admiration for the West Ham manager. The Arsenal boss shares a regional connection with Lopetegui, both hailing from the Basque Country in Spain, and he commended Lopetegui’s successful stints with top clubs like Porto, Real Madrid, and Sevilla, where he won the Europa League. Arteta is not among those calling for Lopetegui’s dismissal and instead praised West Ham’s resilience.

Arteta highlighted the physicality of West Ham, particularly their aerial threat and ability to capitalize on set-pieces. Tomas Soucek’s header against Newcastle was a perfect example of this strength. Arteta also noted West Ham’s capacity to play a direct style, win second balls, and exploit moments of individual brilliance, with their front players always capable of creating danger. He emphasized that the team is “really well-coached,” underlining the challenge they present.

In terms of team news, Arteta revealed that Gabriel Magalhães is a doubt for Saturday’s match, with the Brazilian defender racing against time to recover from injury. Gabriel, who scored in Arsenal’s 5-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon, could miss out, but Arteta remains confident in his team’s attacking options. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Ødegaard have all been in fine form, contributing to a dynamic and potent Arsenal attack.
