Following the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration regarding the team’s inability to create scoring opportunities, which ultimately led to the defeat. With Alexander Isak netting the only goal in a closely fought match, Arteta noted that our efforts to break through the Newcastle defense failed to yield significant chances to test their goalkeeper, Nick Pope.

Arteta stated, “We are definitely frustrated and disappointed with the result. We started strong and had control early on, but a well-placed cross resulted in us going down 1-0.”

He observed a change in momentum: “The energy shifted, and we allowed ourselves to be influenced by the game they wanted to play. We couldn’t maintain the consistency necessary to change that trend. When assessing chances, possession, and overall play, the teams were quite similar.”

He recognized the need for improvement, saying, “When we had the ball, we found it hard to score or generate continuous threats against a defensively savvy team. They excel in defense, and when they gain the lead, they adapt their tactics, making it hard for us to find spaces. Even when we had opportunities, the quality of our final passes and positioning wasn’t enough, resulting in missed chances despite having three clear opportunities.”

This defeat was significant, marking our first consecutive league losses since May 2022. With crucial away matches against Milan and Chelsea approaching, Arteta is hopeful his players will bounce back positively.

Reflecting on the game, he mentioned, “We need to accept this defeat; losing in this league is always challenging. It’s painful and comes with its repercussions. Right now, it’s difficult to express how we feel, but we need to be ready by Wednesday.”

He emphasized the nature of the sport: “In football, you experience setbacks and feel down about them, but soon you must rise, find solutions, work harder, and get back to competing.”
