Pep Guardiola has long expressed his admiration for Bruno Guimarães, the standout midfielder for Newcastle United. Since his £40 million transfer from Lyon in 2022, the Brazilian has quickly become one of the Premier League’s top midfielders. His performances have seen his market value soar to over £100 million, reflecting the release clause in his contract. While Manchester City was linked with a move for him, they ultimately opted not to trigger that clause, likely due to financial reasons rather than any doubts about his ability. Guardiola has praised Guimarães as “exceptional” and has seen him as a potential future replacement for Rodri, who recently won the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

While on international duty with Brazil, Guimarães was asked about the rumors linking him to Manchester City and the praise he had received from Guardiola. He responded by emphasizing his strong connection to Newcastle, saying, “At my club, I’m an idol and the captain, which is something I never imagined just a few years ago. I’m really happy here. The fact that Manchester City is interested shows I’m playing well, but it’s just interest—not more than that. Guardiola has always liked my game, and we’ve spoken a bit, but that’s where it ends.”

Guimarães made it clear that his commitment to Newcastle is unwavering. His role as club captain has further strengthened his connection to the team, and manager Eddie Howe’s decision to hand him the armband this season was intended to inspire even greater performances from him. Despite Guardiola’s evident admiration for him, the possibility of a move to Manchester City seems unlikely for now, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s future. His contract at City runs until 2025, and reports suggest that he will soon make a decision about his future at the club.
