Callum Wilson has opened up about the emotional toll of his persistent injury issues, revealing that the frustration he feels surpasses that of anyone else. The Newcastle United striker, who had only just returned to action last month after a long absence, is now sidelined once again due to a fresh hamstring injury. This setback marks the latest chapter in a challenging year for Wilson, where injuries have limited his appearances to just a handful of starts in 2024. Despite working tirelessly to stay fit, Wilson has played in only 30 of Newcastle’s 69 matches since the start of the previous season.

In an emotional message, Wilson admitted that the constant setbacks have left him feeling defeated, despite all the hard work he has put in to regain full fitness. He expressed his disappointment over not being able to contribute to his team and said that the frustration he feels is more intense than anyone might realize. However, he remains determined to return to his best form in 2025 and thanked his supporters for their continued patience and understanding during this difficult period.

Newcastle United have been cautious in managing Wilson’s return from injury, mindful of the need to avoid rushing him back too quickly. This caution was evident when, after Alexander Isak’s early injury against Crystal Palace last month, Wilson only made a late appearance in the match, with Anthony Gordon stepping in as the central striker. The club’s strategy had been to ensure that when Wilson did return, he would be fully fit to avoid further setbacks. Unfortunately, another hamstring issue now threatens to keep him sidelined once again.

Wilson’s importance to Newcastle cannot be overstated. He played a crucial role in the club’s survival in 2021 and 2022, and his goals helped propel the team to Champions League qualification in 2023. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, has always spoken highly of Wilson’s professionalism and dedication, acknowledging the mental and physical challenges the striker has faced throughout his career. Howe praised Wilson’s resilience and unwavering positivity, even when dealing with repeated injury frustrations. Despite his personal setbacks, Wilson’s presence and attitude within the squad remain invaluable to the team.
