Miami Dolphins fans can’t help but feel tense every time quarterback Tua Tagovailoa rolls out of the pocket. His history of concussions has made every scramble a point of concern.
In Monday night’s 23-15 victory, that anxiety spiked again in the second quarter when Tagovailoa, after throwing an interception, dove headfirst to try and tackle Rams linebacker Christian Rozeboom on the return. Although he quickly returned to the field, the incident likely brought back memories for fans and coaches of his earlier Week 2 injury. Tagovailoa had already missed four games this season after his third concussion in three years, which only amplified fans’ reactions on social media as they criticized him for exposing himself to further risk.
Online comments poured in, with one fan noting, “Tua doesn’t seem to realize how vulnerable he is to injuries,” referencing his decision to forgo a guardian cap. Another echoed this sentiment, saying, “He doesn’t protect himself at all. I honestly don’t see him lasting more than a few more years.” Others were more direct, calling his play “reckless” and even suggesting he consider retiring for his own safety.
Despite the criticism, Tagovailoa finished the game with 207 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, a passer rating of 89.6, and was sacked three times. In the end, he was fortunate to avoid further injury—though the game left plenty wondering if his next risky move might not end as well.
