Neemias Queta stepped up in a major way on Monday night, making his first NBA start for the Celtics in their commanding 123-93 win over the Hawks. With Boston missing a regular starter, head coach Joe Mazzulla chose Queta over Luke Kornet to join Al Horford, preferring Queta’s versatility for a switching defensive scheme to counter Atlanta’s Trae Young.
Queta made the most of the opportunity, logging 23 strong minutes and posting 10 points, seven rebounds, a block, and a steal, all while leading the team with a +31 rating. This performance capped off an impressive road trip for Queta, who’s become a valuable contributor over the past four games. Since Boston’s comeback attempt against Indiana, where Queta played crucial minutes, he’s averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, playing a key role in Boston’s recent three-game winning streak.
Mazzulla has been quick to recognize Queta’s growth and impact. “He’s come a long way as a player, and I don’t think he realizes his full potential yet,” Mazzulla commented. “His ceiling is high, and tonight he showed what he’s capable of.”
Queta’s breakout could significantly affect the Celtics’ rotation. His athleticism and rebounding add an important dimension to Boston’s frontcourt, allowing Horford to reduce his minutes while keeping Boston competitive without Kristaps Porzingis. With Queta, Kornet, and Xavier Tillman, the Celtics now have a deep, balanced rotation at center.
Looking ahead, Mazzulla sees even greater potential for Queta: “We’re holding him to a high standard because he’s capable of so much. He works hard, he’s coachable, and he’s realizing his own ability,” Mazzulla added.
As the Celtics head home from a successful 3-1 road trip, they might have gained more than just wins—Queta’s emergence could become a key advantage if he continues this level of play.
