A month after firing head coach Robert Saleh, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson dismissed general manager Joe Douglas in the wake of the team’s disappointing 3-8 start to the season. Douglas, who traded for Aaron Rodgers in hopes of boosting the team’s Super Bowl chances, saw that plan quickly derail when Rodgers tore his Achilles after just four plays in his debut. At 40 years old, Rodgers is now having the worst season of his career, failing to display the MVP-level form he once had.

In announcing Douglas’ departure, Johnson thanked him for his contributions over six years but stated that the team would now begin the search for a new GM.

The Jets’ original expectation was that Rodgers would elevate the team to championship contention, but the offense has remained ineffective despite adding playmakers like All-Pro receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall. Additionally, the defense has taken a step back, compounding the team’s woes.

With both Saleh and Douglas now gone, speculation is growing about Rodgers’ future in New York. ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported that a source familiar with the situation would be “shocked” if Johnson decides to bring Rodgers back for the 2025 season.

If the Jets choose to keep Rodgers, they would need to trigger a $35 million option bonus along with a $2.5 million base salary for 2025. However, with no guaranteed money and a significant $23.5 million cap hit, it would be a tough decision. Given that Rodgers will be 41 and is struggling this season, it seems unlikely the Jets would justify such a financial commitment for another year of underwhelming performance.
