During a meeting with New York Yankees executives on Monday, Juan Soto made it clear that he expects the team to continue improving if they want to be serious contenders for championships. Soto, who is the top free agent this offseason, questioned Yankees chairman Hal Steinbrenner about the team’s commitment to sustained roster upgrades. Steinbrenner reassured him that the Yankees are dedicated to strengthening their team this winter, with plans to build on their past successes.
Although no formal contract offer was made during the meeting, the Yankees left feeling optimistic about the possibility of future negotiations. Soto, who had a stellar season in New York, has already met with the Mets, Red Sox, and Blue Jays, and is set to meet with the World Series champion Dodgers soon. The Philadelphia Phillies are also showing interest in the star outfielder. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, is expected to land him a deal potentially worth $600 million or more.
While the Yankees are seen as the leading contenders for Soto, the Mets—backed by their deep-pocketed owner Steve Cohen—are a serious rival in the race. Soto is expected to make his decision during the Winter Meetings, which will take place in Dallas from December 8-11.
