Graeme Souness has advised Julen Lopetegui to secure a strong lawyer as speculation intensifies around his future at West Ham. Since taking charge in the summer, the Spanish manager has faced a series of challenges, with the Hammers currently hovering just six points above the relegation zone, putting his position under increasing scrutiny.
The upcoming clash between West Ham and Wolves on Monday [7 December] is being seen as a crucial match for both managers, with rumors swirling that their jobs could be on the line. Souness has criticized the mounting pressure on Lopetegui, stating in the Daily Mail, “There’s a lot about how modern football clubs are run that I don’t like. Monday’s game is already being dubbed ‘El Sackico,’ as both managers are reportedly facing the sack.”
He continued, “West Ham appointed Lopetegui in the summer, and Wolves handed Gary O’Neil a new contract in August. Yet, just a few months later, we’re talking about potential dismissals. It’s gotten to the point where the most important decision a manager can make is hiring a good lawyer to ensure their contract exit is financially secure because, inevitably, it seems like it’s coming.”
Even if West Ham manages to secure a positive result on Monday, Lopetegui’s future remains uncertain. Many believe that the 58-year-old has struggled to make his mark at the club, with few signs of progress in terms of style or results. Souness also pointed out that David Sullivan, West Ham’s owner, chose to hire Lopetegui after David Moyes’ departure, and now questions are being raised about the manager’s contract and the wisdom of that decision.
While many supporters are dissatisfied with the team’s performances this season, Souness’ comments underline the broader issues at the club’s top level. If Lopetegui is dismissed, the responsibility will fall heavily on Sullivan to find the right replacement, increasing the pressure on the West Ham hierarchy to make a sound decision.
