Although Bayern Munich and Barcelona do not play in the same league, Bayern had been a difficult opponent for Barcelona over the past decade. Barcelona had struggled in several encounters with them, but this changed when Hansi Flick’s squad defeated Vincent Kompany’s team 4-1 recently.
The loss was a surprising wake-up call for Bayern, who had viewed themselves as nearly unbeatable against Barcelona. Following that result, Flick’s team showed their strength again with a decisive 4-0 win over Real Madrid.
The loss was tough for Bayern, and German football legend Lothar Matthäus has openly shared his thoughts on it. According to SPORT, Matthäus claims Bayern will not lose to Barcelona 4-1 again. He attributed the defeat to Bayern’s new coach and new system, arguing that these factors made a repeat performance unlikely. He stated, “Bayern will not lose 4-1 to Barça again. It’s clear that after two months with a new coach and a new system, not everything is functioning perfectly. After the defeat in Barcelona, Kompany pointed out the team’s mistakes and showed them what adjustments were needed.”
However, Matthäus may be overlooking the fact that Barcelona also has a new coach and system that have proven highly effective. Therefore, suggesting that Bayern’s loss was simply due to lack of preparation may not fully explain the outcome.
Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona has shown they can now compete directly with Bayern. Kompany used a similar tactical approach as the Catalan team, but Flick’s Barcelona executed it more successfully.
Perhaps next time, Flick’s Barcelona might even win 5-1 to demonstrate that the previous result was no accident. But for now, it’s best to see how both teams continue to perform this season before making conclusions.
