Eddie Howe is pleased with Newcastle’s progress in establishing a balanced midfield after their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea. The Magpies scored twice in quick succession, with Alexander Isak capitalizing on a defensive lapse in the 23rd minute, followed shortly by a deflected header from Joe Willock that Chelsea’s Axel Disasi accidentally directed into his own net.
Reaching the quarter-finals is a welcome boost for Newcastle, who have recently encountered some challenges in the Premier League. Howe made five changes to the lineup from their last league match against Chelsea, reconfiguring the midfield with Sandro Tonali centrally, Sean Longstaff on the right, and Joelinton on the left.
Discussing his tactical approach, Howe emphasized the importance of adapting to each opponent: “Every match requires its own balance. Since we’ve had a tough time in the league, it’s essential to keep adjusting—Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff were excellent tonight, and having talented players competing for positions makes a big difference.”
Tonali’s role in the center helped set up Isak’s goal, showcasing his adaptability, while Joelinton also impressed with his versatility. Howe commented, “We brought Tonali in for his ability to adapt within the midfield; he’s disciplined and defensively sound.” He also praised Joelinton’s ability to shift across multiple roles, including wing-back, which he sees as a valuable asset.
Joelinton’s strong performance on the left has created further competition for that position. “It’s tough to choose who plays on the left given the talent we have in Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Joe Willock,” said Howe. “Joelinton and Willock pair up well, which adds quality depth to that side.”
Despite an improved second half, Chelsea couldn’t find the net, with Joao Felix having their best chance to score. Head coach Enzo Maresca acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but emphasized shifting focus to their next Premier League fixture against Manchester United. “We value all competitions, but now it’s time to look forward. Losing is always difficult, but we’ll prepare for the next game,” Maresca said.
