Newcastle United are now shifting focus to a different target after their unsuccessful bid to secure Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle’s Bid for Guehi Falls Short

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United made a strong push to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as part of their summer transfer plans. After injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle prioritized adding an experienced Premier League center-back to strengthen their defense for the new season. To meet this need, they offered a substantial sum to try to bring in Guehi.

However, despite Newcastle’s highest offer of £60 million plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, Crystal Palace held firm, declining all bids for their captain. With Guehi having less than two years left on his contract and showing limited interest in a renewal, other clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are now monitoring his situation closely. A reduced future price might attract even more competition, further complicating Newcastle’s chances of signing him.

Undeterred, Howe is still determined to bolster his defensive lineup and is now considering alternative players.

Newcastle Turns Attention to Tomas Araujo

Recent reports from Portugal indicate that Newcastle have turned their sights to Tomas Araujo, a young defender from Benfica, for a possible move in 2025. Crystal Palace has also shown interest in Araujo, viewing him as a potential replacement for Joachim Andersen, and Chelsea previously explored signing him during the summer but had their approach turned down.

According to O Jogo, Newcastle is now actively pursuing Araujo as a summer transfer possibility, with Chelsea and Crystal Palace still showing interest as well. While Benfica is unlikely to allow the player to leave in January, a summer move is possible, and Newcastle is viewed as a strong candidate.

Football analyst Jack Fawcett has described Araujo as an “elite” talent, noting his impressive form this season. The 21-year-old has become a regular starter for Benfica, featuring in 12 of their 16 matches and earning a spot on the Portuguese national team.

Araujo’s contract includes a release clause of €100 million (£84 million), but reports suggest that clubs such as Crystal Palace, Chelsea, or Newcastle could negotiate a lower fee for a summer move. At two years younger than Guehi, Araujo could offer Newcastle a valuable, long-term addition to their squad.
