Newcastle United, led by Eddie Howe, are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United winger Antony, whose £86 million transfer from Ajax has not delivered the expected results.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Newcastle are looking to reinforce their attacking options in the winter transfer window, with Antony emerging as a potential target. Howe is keen to add more depth to the wing positions, believing the Brazilian could offer a fresh option for the squad.
After a somewhat disappointing summer window in which Newcastle missed out on several key signings and brought in only William Osula to strengthen the attack, the club is now turning its attention to bolstering its wide areas for the second half of the season.
Antony’s challenges at Manchester United
The 24-year-old Brazilian winger rose to prominence at Ajax, which earned him an £86 million move to Manchester United in 2022. However, since arriving at Old Trafford, Antony has struggled to consistently perform, with only 11 goals and five assists in 83 appearances to date.
Antony’s playing time has been limited this season, with just a single minute on the pitch so far, and it seems he is no longer a regular in Erik ten Hag’s lineup. While Ten Hag has previously expressed admiration for Antony, reports suggest that Manchester United are now open to selling him for a reduced fee of around £40 million, despite his contract lasting another three years.
Why Howe wants Antony
Eddie Howe is reportedly very interested in bringing Antony to Newcastle, hoping the winger can help boost the team’s attacking depth. Although their primary target remains Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, they see Antony as a viable alternative if that deal falls through.
Despite his underwhelming stint at Manchester United, Howe believes that Antony could thrive in a new environment like Newcastle. The manager sees potential in the Brazilian and thinks he could become an important part of the team’s future.
Antony is reportedly open to the move, and with Newcastle possibly able to meet Manchester United’s revised asking price, a deal could be on the cards during the winter transfer window.
