The New York Giants’ decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones has sparked controversy, especially among his teammates, including All-Pro defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, who was drafted alongside Jones. Lawrence, who is a close friend of Jones, openly expressed his frustration with the move.

“It’s a tough situation. He’s my best friend, so of course I feel for him,” Lawrence said. “But I can’t control what they decide. They made their choice based on what they think is best. As a player, you have to keep going, but as a brother, it’s hard to watch.” Lawrence also acknowledged that although head coach Brian Daboll stated the decision was difficult, he still believes Jones is the team’s best quarterback, despite the coaches’ differing views.

The benching may be partly influenced by Jones’ $23.5 million injury guarantee, which could kick in for the 2025 season if he suffers an injury that affects his ability to pass a physical. The Giants may also be preparing to pursue a new quarterback in the upcoming draft. However, the situation has raised questions, as the team isn’t just benching Jones—they are promoting Tommy DeVito to starting quarterback, with Jones now demoted to the fourth spot on the depth chart.

In response to the criticism from Lawrence and others, Daboll acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision but emphasized his respect for Lawrence’s opinion. “I have a lot of respect for Dex,” Daboll said. “I understand not everyone will agree with the decision, and that’s okay. We make the best decision we can and move forward. We’re focused on getting ready to play Tampa.”

While Daboll and the Giants are clearly thinking about the future, it remains to be seen whether Daboll will have a hand in selecting the team’s next quarterback in 2025, or if that decision will fall to someone else.
