The Boston Red Sox concluded the 2024 season with an even 81-81 record, placing third in the American League East. Despite their World Series victory in 2018, the team has struggled to maintain postseason relevance, missing the playoffs in five of the past six seasons, including the last three consecutively.
Hoping to reclaim the AL East crown in 2025, the Red Sox are turning to the free-agent market for reinforcements. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Boston has expressed interest in starting pitchers Blake Snell and Max Fried.
Snell, a former Cy Young Award winner with the San Diego Padres in 2023, spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco Giants. Though injuries limited him, Snell made 20 starts, compiling a 3.12 ERA and striking out 145 batters over 104 innings.
Meanwhile, Fried has been a consistent force for the Atlanta Braves since his debut in 2017. In 2024, the left-hander delivered 29 starts with an 11-10 record, a 3.25 ERA, and 166 strikeouts across 174.1 innings.
In addition to pitching upgrades, the Red Sox are reportedly exploring offensive options, including discussions with Yankees outfielder Juan Soto. Bringing in high-caliber talent like Soto would further enhance Boston’s chances of returning to contention.
As the team navigates an offseason full of prominent free agents, there’s optimism that the Red Sox can reshape their roster and position themselves as serious contenders in the 2025 campaign.
