Oliver Glasner admitted that Crystal Palace were unable to produce the top-level performance required in their 3-2 loss to Arsenal in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, despite the final score suggesting a tighter match. The game, played in North London, was a challenging encounter for Palace. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early strike in the fourth minute and Eddie Nketiah’s header late in the game were overshadowed by Gabriel Jesus’ hat-trick. Although there were questions surrounding Jesus’ second goal, the linesman’s on-field decision stood in the absence of VAR.

Reflecting on the defeat, Glasner expressed frustration with his team’s overall execution. “We played too slowly and didn’t demand the ball enough, which is crucial for breaking through their press,” he said. “Before the match, I emphasized that we needed a top-level performance to have a chance here. Unfortunately, we didn’t reach that level.”

Despite the early goal, Palace’s performance in the first half showed signs of caution. “We didn’t press them aggressively enough and were too respectful. In possession, we gave the ball away too easily,” Glasner explained.

There were, however, some positives to take from the match, especially Palace’s ability to score twice against a strong Arsenal side. “It’s a positive that we managed to score two goals; that’s not easy to do here,” said Glasner. “It’s frustrating that with two goals at the Emirates, we didn’t even force a penalty shootout. But at the end of the day, Arsenal deserved to win.”

Glasner also raised doubts about the legitimacy of Jesus’ second goal, questioning whether the striker was offside. “Arsenal had too many chances in the second half, and when you give them that many clear opportunities, it’s only a matter of time before they score,” he said. “Our defense was too slow in reacting to their movements, and each goal came from us failing to close the gaps.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Glasner remained focused on his team’s preparations. “We can’t control what Arsenal does, and Mikel Arteta won’t be asking for my advice on his team selection. Our focus is on doing our best,” he said. “Arsenal have a great squad, and that’s why they’re competing in both the Premier League and the Champions League. We have our own circumstances, but we will give everything to try and win.”

In preparation for Arsenal’s set-piece threats, Palace had left three players forward during the first match to disrupt Arsenal’s corner routines. When asked about the decision, Glasner humorously responded, “Ask me again after Saturday.”
