The much-anticipated final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park remains postponed after last weekend’s fixture was called off due to the severe safety risks caused by Storm Darragh. Initially set for 12:30 PM on Saturday, December 7, the match will now be rescheduled to a later, undisclosed date.

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the postponement created a bit of a headache when it came to squad selection. However, there are compelling reasons why this delay could ultimately prove beneficial as the season progresses. A major upside is the increased likelihood that Liverpool and Everton will feature in a double gameweek later in the season. This would mean both teams play twice in one fantasy week, providing ample point-scoring potential for popular FPL assets like Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and others.

In fact, the postponement could be especially advantageous for those who have yet to use their Triple Captain chip. A double gameweek for Salah could be the perfect opportunity to activate this chip, maximizing his point-scoring potential. While the exact timing remains unclear, social media speculation points to Gameweeks 24, 25, or 33 as the likely candidates for this double gameweek. During these weeks, Liverpool could face Everton alongside teams like Bournemouth, Wolves, or Leicester—opponents who offer significant fantasy potential.

Salah has been in excellent form this season, blanking in just two of his first 14 games. He remains a strong pick, especially as Liverpool’s defense continues to shine, with the team recording the most clean sheets in the league—seven in total. Everton, too, has impressed defensively, keeping five clean sheets, putting them among the top teams in that regard. As a result, FPL managers may want to consider bringing in an Everton defender, alongside a Liverpool double-up, when the double gameweek arrives.

Another silver lining for FPL managers came from Cole Palmer’s unexpected 18-point haul against Tottenham. About 60% of FPL managers benefited from Palmer’s performance, with many having him as Vice-Captain while Salah was their Captain. With Liverpool’s match postponed, those who had Palmer as Vice-Captain earned 36 points, giving them a significant boost in mini-league rankings.

In summary, while the postponement of the Merseyside Derby initially caused frustration for FPL managers, it may actually lead to greater opportunities down the road, with the potential for double gameweeks and increased point-scoring chances.
